The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association — and, in Fredericksburg, Mary Washington Chapter #290.

An independent Hellenic-American organisation

AHEPA is an independent Hellenic-American service organisation, dedicated to promoting Hellenism, education, philanthropy, civic responsibility, and family and individual excellence.

Although AHEPA is not a ministry of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, it has shared a close relationship with the Greek Orthodox Church in America for more than a century. Local chapters often support Greek Orthodox parishes and their communities through philanthropy, scholarships, service, and the preservation of Hellenic heritage.

Mary Washington Chapter #290

Fredericksburg is home to Mary Washington Chapter #290 of the Order of AHEPA, District 3, in continuous operation since 4 June 1933.

The chapter holds fundraisers in support of its scholarship fund, and routinely donates to Nativity of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church as part of its stewardship.

The mission of AHEPA

AHEPA was founded in Atlanta, Georgia, on 26 July 1922, at a time when Greek immigrants in the United States faced discrimination, bigotry and barriers to full participation in American life.

Today it is an international service organisation, and its mission is usually set out in five parts.

Hellenism

Awareness and appreciation of Hellenic heritage, culture, principles and ideals.

Education

Scholarships and educational programmes, and support for the study and preservation of Hellenic culture and classical studies.

Philanthropy

Fundraising, volunteering, disaster assistance, community service and other charitable work.

Civic responsibility

Civic engagement and public service, and the principles of democracy, freedom and responsible citizenship.

Family & individual excellence

Strengthening individuals, families and communities through fellowship, service and education.

The AHEPA family

AHEPA is part of a wider family of Hellenic-American organisations, which also includes the Daughters of Penelope, the Sons of Pericles and the Maids of Athena.

Together they promote Hellenic heritage, education, philanthropy, civic responsibility, service and fellowship.
